Beyond the Resume: SC Future Makers, SC Manufacturers Alliance and USC Partner to Prepare Students for Real-World Success

Internships are more than just a resume booster – they provide hands-on learning that bridges the gap between classroom knowledge and real-world application. The Carolina Internship Program (SCIP) at the University of South Carolina is helping students like Noah Hirschegger, a mechanical engineering major, gain invaluable industry experience while shaping their future careers.

Noah recently completed an internship at Robert Bosch in Charleston, South Carolina, where he worked as a Manufacturing Intern in the automotive industry. Bosch’s Charleston facility specializes in producing cutting-edge fuel injectors and fuel system components for some of the world’s top automakers. The facility plays a key role in advancing automotive technology and manufacturing efficiency, making it an ideal learning environment for an aspiring engineer.

During his internship, Noah was challenged to take the lead on projects focused on process optimization, quality monitoring, and problem sourcing—critical elements in a modern manufacturing environment.

“As a co-op at Bosch, I have furthered my understanding of what it truly means to be an engineer,” Noah shared. “These challenges have pushed me to use the skills learned at the University of South Carolina, teaching me how the knowledge from my degree is applied in manufacturing.”

Through SCIP, Noah gained more than just technical skills—he developed a stronger sense of self-awareness in areas like communication and leadership. The program helped him reflect on his strengths and weaknesses, ultimately preparing him to make meaningful contributions to both his own professional growth and his company’s success.

“With the help of SCIP, I have grown professionally in a manner far beyond what I expected,” he said.

A key driver of SCIP’s success is the partnership between USC, the South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance (SCMA), and SC Future Makers. SCMA and SC Future Makers play a critical role in bringing manufacturers to the table, ensuring students have access to real-world learning opportunities that align with industry needs. Since the partnership began, 45 SCMA member companies, like Bosch, have participated and are providing invaluable internship experiences to students. More than 250 USC students have applied for these opportunities, further strengthening South Carolina’s future manufacturing workforce.

The Carolina Internship Program continues to serve as a vital resource for students seeking to connect with employers, gain industry experience, and refine their career readiness. Noah’s story is just one example of how USC, SCMA, and SC Future Makers are preparing the next generation of manufacturing leaders.
