Our Story

Solvay is a multi-specialty chemical company, committed to developing chemistry that addresses key societal challenges. Solvay innovates and partners with customers in diverse global end markets. Its products and solutions are used in planes, cars, smart and medical devices, batteries, in mineral and oil extraction, and many other applications promoting sustainability. Its lightweighting materials enhance cleaner mobility; its formulations optimize the use of resources and its performance chemicals improve air and water quality. Solvay South Carolina is home to four manufacturing sites and a Research and Innovation Center. The Solvay Greenville site manufactures several grades of Torlon® PAI (polyamide-imide). The different grades combine the exceptional performance of thermoset polyimides with the melt-processing advantage of thermoplastics, used on the Solar Impulse airplane that made a tour around the world in 2015-2016. The Piedmont site manufactures PAN and pitch-based carbon fibers. Its PAN products are qualified in numerous commercial and military aerospace programs; its pitch products are qualified in numerous commercial, military and satellite programs. The Research and Innovation Center is located within Solvay’s carbon fiber manufacturing site in Piedmont. The Center develops carbon fiber for both aerospace and industrial applications. The Rock Hill site produces PAN-based carbon fibers which are primarily used in the aerospace industry servicing the Boeing 787 program as well as other Boeing programs and GE Aircraft Engines. The Spartanburg site produces specialty chemicals known as “surfactants,” which are used to improve a product’s effectiveness. Typical applications for these products include paints and coatings, agricultural products, lubricants and common household products. Together the four sites employee nearly 250 employees in South Carolina with the majority at our Spartanburg and Piedmont facilities.
